Is it really heavy metal?

I recently watched heavy metal, a documentary about the rise of heavy metal.  The bands featured included KISS, judas priest, metallica, and - linkin park and limp bizkit????

I have nothing against the old school bands that helped metal along, but what I want to know is, why are they the only ones exposed in these documentaries?  What happened to slayer and all the other underground metal influences that have an even greater effect on heavy metal these days?  In my opinion, metallica doesn't compare to slayer in any way (i know ill get **** for this but its my opinion)

Also, to say that metal has evolved into limp bizkit and linkin park is rediculous.  Whoever thought to end that documentary with name drops such as those is a moron.  Just off the top of my head i can list far better bands that get no credit for continuing the metal tradition that was laid before them.  bands such as children of bodom, dimmu borgir, unearth, hatebreed, chimaira, lamb of god and others (sorry if i left your favorite band out)

To say metal has evolved into bands such as linkin park and limp bizkit is horrible, and leaving other bands who deserve credit out of it is even worse.  Maybe next time make a documentary thats worth while watching through to the end.

Most of the people who come up with those documentaries are the same people in the 80's who thought just because a band had long hair & loud distorted guitars they were metal. So W T F E

As far as Sabbath jumping on a band wagon that just makes me laugh. Blue Cheer & Iron Butterfly at the most were heavy blues rock or hippie rock. If you would like to go technical & talk about the instrumentation differences between most rock & metal I have no problem with that. Because as far as how bass, guitar, & drum are played together as a unit or also time signature there are big differences.

I might get into a heated discussion, but here are the following bands who are "not" metal...

Led Zepplin
Kiss
AC/DC
Van Halen
Bon Jovi

Although some will say that these bands are metal, but in reality, they're not, they are just hard rock bands. There is a difference between hard rock and metal, where as metal is loud, fast and heavy.I'm 41 years old and I have never considered Zepplin to be a metal band and any group(case in point with Zepplin) that does bluegrass songs on their albums is certainly not metal.

the real bands of creating heavy metal is Iron Butterfly and Blue Cheer but hardly anyone knows who they are so they dont mention them they mention bands like Black Sabbath who jumped on the band wagon a little to late.

Ok, I can see where you would be upset that they leave it with saying that metal has developed into Limp Bizkit. Limp is not metal in anyway, shape or form. I'm also sure that there were TONS of bands they would have loved to feature but didnt have time too. Although, I agree that they at least could have been mentioned. (It's been awhile since Ive seen this documentary, but I could have sworn they at least MENTIONED Slayer.)

But, to try and say that the old school bands, such as Judas Priest, shouldn't be covered is ridiculous. You would not have any of the bands you love if Black Sabbath and Judas Priest didn't exsist. Quite simply, I doubt metal would even exist today without Priest. The took the darkness and the strength of Sabbath and sped it up and added more guitars, so on and so on. They were a VERY necessary step in the evolution of metal.

Also, keep in mind, that even the artists and metal gods they interviewed for this and other documentaries have very different opinions on what is metal. Even the fans. My favorite band of all time is Led Zepplin....are they metal? Absolutely not. They are hard rock. Did they "influence" metal? Yes, more then you might believe. Every bit of "new" music you hear is based on a merrid of influences, some unexpected.

I started listening to metal like Priest and Maiden. Some of the hair bands also. I can hardly watch "Metal Mania" as most of it is the hair bands. I'm so glad someone mentioned today's bands. When I picked up Sam Dunn's "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey", it was the last stuff I had heard about was Korn, Limp Bizkit, and Linkin Park. I was bored and continued listening to old cd's and old ones I didn't buy originally. Nevermore, Arch Enemy, 3 Inches of Blood, Trivium, Warbringer(newer band) and many others put out high quality metal. If you're looking for new stuff, just type in "heavy metal" in your browser also. I went from having a Dream Theater CD to many cd's old and new. The new Exodus albums are phemonenal and it's interesting hearing the infulences of musicians I grew up on. I can't headbang as hard but my steering wheel can take a beating. METAL RULES!!!!!!
One other thing, check bands out and see if you like them. I use online metal magazines as guidelines. Some I agree with, some I don't. With MP3 players, you can pick and choose. But if you really like a song, buy the album. It keeps metal alive and the musicians fed. They aren't getting rich doing this kind of music.

Neither Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park are emo nor metal. They're rock mixed with hip hop and rap. Besides, Limp Bizkit became famous in the 90's, way before most kids knew was emo.

Linkin Park is nothing more than a yuppie emo band who strayed too far from their origins. Limp Bizkit is a mainstream group who wouldn't be missed if their jet crashed. Anthrax is metal, not some punk /wrists group.
