music videos... remember them?

if you are a 16 year old kid like myself you would never think that vh1 and mtv used to play music videos all day. for some reason i am obsessed with 80s music so i usually watch vh1 classic. this is not the case anymore. i used to be able to come home from school and watch request hour, we are the 80s, etc. now they ditched request hour and they put the music videos only in the morning instead of during daylight hours. now it seems they show more music related shows and worst of all MOVIES! isnt that what HBO, Cinemax etc. are for?? why is it that every music channel cant seem to stick to what they were created for?

Right, there's enough channels out there that are showing cuss word-free, cut-out-the-good-stuff kind of movies out there, why show them on VH1 Classic? Just a pure waste... Does anyone EVER really watch those movies?! I'm not talking about Lifetime movies or anything, I'm talking about BIG movies that networks get ahold of them, and take out the cuss words and stuff. I figure if VH1 classic can waste even 6 hours a week on movies, then there's no reason why they cant throw in some really good video blocks in that frame of time, like Super 70's or 60's Generation (hint, hint:))!

I'll touch on what Andy said...

When I first got VH1 Classic in January 2002, the channel showed the videos on a 3 8-hour rotation. This was great; if folks were working, not at home or asleep, they could record the hours they wanted. I think somewhere around 2004, the rotation went to a 12-hour rotation. Now instead of 3 chances to see a vid you wanted, you now had 2 chances to catch it. So there was still more than one opportunity to catch something good at one time or another.

Additional hours like 60's Generation, Super 70's, Pop Show, Headline Act (a 1/2 hr of one artist) and later, Classic Soul, were available in addition to Allstar Jams, We Are The 80's, Rockfest & Metal Mania to help narrow certain videos fans wanted to see. Tuesday Twoplay, showing 2 back-to-back classic videos, was not bad, either. For a while, even All Request Hour was also very good.

Vestiges of these hours remain. Classic Current appears to have recycled the Tues 2Play format, but on a mercifully shorter scale. The half hours of videos following the programming recalls HEADLINE ACT. When you see a 4 or 5 video block of 60's vids or 70's vids, 60's Gen & S70's briefly lives again. When there's a block of vids by African-American artists, Classic Soul also lives on. Allstar Jams has been revamped into the Morning Video Block. We Are The 80's simply got a name change to Totally 80's earlier this year. As for All Request Hour - that kinda fell by the wayside, sadly.

When the channel changed to a 24-hour rotation in May 2005, there was one last hope for rare videos, THE VAULT. Even though there was still some regular rotation clips that found their way onto the show, THE VAULT was probably the last time fans could possibly catch something out of the norm.

Classic got the videos to do what was needed: increase word-of-mouth about the channel, and get people to sign up for the channel on dish or cable. I have to admit, when the All Request Hour started asking people to add the name of their cable company onto their requests, I thought, "Why? That's not really any of your concern." That just struck me the wrong way. Strike 2 came with videos being requested by the same "viewer (?)" more than once. Strike 3 came when people's requests were not being properly answered. Someone specifically requested Stevie Nicks' version of "Stand Back" and Classic aired the live version she did w/FMac on the SOUNDSTAGE/LIVE IN BOSTON set. As a viewer, I felt very disappointed. If they were not going to air Stevie's video, they should never have read it, to give that viewer false hope.

I know a lot of other people could probably give you more specifics about when things went downhill, but this is all based on my observations of VH1 Classic. (Sigh.)

The sad thing is that "music channels" aren't anymore b/c they want to get more veiwers and forget about us the original veiwers...Money Money Money....

It's not just VH1 Classic. The country music channels are going downhill too.

Yeah, the directors at VH1 Classic wanted to make money, so they decided to use "programming" to boost interest and commercialism. I remember when VH1 Classic FIRST came out, and it was nothing BUT videos, and totally COMMERCIAL FREE!!!! Between 2000-2003, I watched VH1 classic RELIGIOUSLY (and even recorded a TON of videos for my collection...not to mention, that in case I missed a video, I could watch it 12hrs later, cuz they always repeated it...which was nice:)). Yeah, VH1 Classic really went downhill:(. Maybe sometime in the future someone will start a video station that caters to people like ourselves, but you know....same old story...just like MTV/VH1/VH1 Classic...someone along the way will get greedy and ruin it for everyone else:(!

Well I'm over 40 and back in the day mtv showed nothing but videos. There were also other video only shows on....I remember one that was on a local uhf channel at 7 in the morning that I watched while getting dressed for school! I'm totally sick of reality shows too. Don't we get bombarded w/them enough on network stations...the music stations should stick w/just music.

I agree with you/ Fortunately, I can watch when they view. It's unfortuante that VH1 (regualar) has devolved into another reality broadcaster of junk.

I realize that there needs to be some "fill" but why not with music from all the decades.

I relate to what you're saying. However, let's just be thankful that VH1 Classic is as good as it is. I'm just hoping it'll stay this good, seeing as all the other music channels are jumping ship and delving into reality programming. A request hour would be nice, and hopefully it'll be brought back. In the meantime, let's just enjoy as much 80s as we can get. By the way, I love it when someone your age says he/she loves stuff from my fave decade! Have fun with it!
